IF it’s your birthday today and you haven’t received any cards, it’s just Storm Eunice that doesn’t love you, not your friends and family.
With Eunice wreaking havoc throughout the UK, Royal Mail has suspended deliveries to all LD postcodes in Powys on Friday.
So, whether it’s the package you’ve been waiting for ages for from Amazon or the bill from the garage for your car that hasn’t arrived, you’ll probably have to wait until tomorrow or next week for it.
With Storm Eunice’s impending arrival last night leading to a rare red warning being issued by the Met Office for South Wales, that was always going to affect deliveries today, especially in Mid Wales, with lorries having to travel over the Brecon Beacons to get the region’s mail to the depot in Llandrindod Wells. For that reason, Powys residents are experiencing a delay of service today, with the county itself affected by an amber weather warning.
A Royal Mail spokesperson said: “We expect Storm Eunice to cause severe disruption to the delivery, collection and distribution of mail across the country.
“In areas for which the Met Office has issued a red warning, we have had no choice but to suspend deliveries and close our delivery offices. In areas covered by an amber warning, we are assessing risk based on local knowledge, and will keep services running where possible. We will be reviewing the situation throughout the day, while continuing to prioritise the safety of our staff and customers.”

Under the ‘Severe Weather Service Alert’ section on the Royal Mail website, a statement read: “Storm Eunice arrived this morning, bringing extremely high winds which have affected air, rail and road transportation across the UK.
“The Met Office has issued a red weather warning for South Wales and the south west of England between 7am and 12pm, and a further warning for south and south east England, London, and the east of England from 10am to 3pm today. A red weather warning indicates a risk of danger to life.
“The impact of Storm Eunice is expected to cause severe disruption to mail delivery, collection and distribution across the country. Whilst we will do all we can to keep our services operating as normally as possible in areas where it’s safe to do so, the safety of our people is paramount and services will be reviewed throughout the day.”
Around 40,000 homes across Wales are believed to have lost power today, both bridges into Wales have closed and lorries have been blown over by high winds.
A gust of 92mph (148km/h) was recorded earlier off the Pembrokeshire coast.
The Met Office red warning expired in Wales at midday, with an amber warning for all of Wales ending at 9pm.
Both the M4 Prince of Wales Bridge and M48 Severn Bridge into south Wales have been shut – operators said they believed this was the first time this has been caused by wind since the second crossing opened in 1996.
Two lorries were blown over on the M4 westbound between junctions 37 at Pyle and 38 at Groes, with the motorway closed in both directions and diversions in place.
All schools in Powys have been closed for the day, while all train services in the country were cancelled yesterday. Follow all the latest on Storm Eunice via our live blog.
