A former nursing sister with the RAF is the new chairman of the Llanidloes Branch of the Royal British Legion Women's Section.

Viv Williams said it is an "honour to have the confidence of the members to be in that position".

The branch's main aim is to support the Poppy Appeal and the Legion in the Llanidloes area, which Mrs Williams said "always receives an excellent response".

Speaking about her new three-year role, Mrs Williams said: "We're a small branch but we hope to continue punching above our weight."

"We support the activities in the town and we have a very strong Poppy Appeal every year and I'm very proud of that.

"Whatever the position you're in, you're only as good as the people around you, supporting you and feeding you with information. We are a very good, strong group and everybody is supportive. You couldn't function without the support of the others, it's very much a team."

The new chairman was presented with her badge of office by Pat Thomas, President of Llanidloes Royal British Legion's Women's Section.

Mrs Williams was a nursing sister with the Royal Air Force for four years before returning to Llanidloes in the late 1970s.

She served in Hong Kong, Singapore and Cyprus during the trouble when Turkey invaded the island.

"It was an interesting service for a few years," she said. "It was most enjoyable. I did bring a plane load of pregnant women back from Cyprus. We didn't have any births on board but one or two delivered quite quickly afterwards."
