JUST when you might have been beginning to think support for Llanfihangel Rhydithon Community Primary School had peaked – along comes a mountainous new fundraiser.
Supporters of the under threat primary school in Dolau are embarking on an epic trip to conquer the Welsh Three Peaks Challenge in May. This will involve ascending Snowdon (Yr Wyddfa), Cadair Idris and Pen-y-Fan in 24 hours.
The Welsh Three Peaks includes a total walking distance of 17 miles (27.4km) and an ascent of 2,334 metres (7,657ft). That's more climbing than the Yorkshire Three Peaks but over a shorter walking distance and only 666 metres less climbing than the renowned National Three Peaks climb of Snowdon, Ben Nevis and Scafell Pike.
A group of Dolau locals will be attempting the trek on Saturday, May 14, with local transport firm Highways Adventures putting on a free coach to take them – as well as anyone else who wants to join – to all three destinations.
Spaces are limited but Weales Wheels, another firm, will be putting on a free bus to take supporters who would like to join them on the final peak of Pen-y-Fan.
A gofundme page has been set up for donations, with the trip hoping to raise £5,000 for the fight to keep the rural Radnorshire village school open.
“Highway Adventures will be driving a minibus of Dolau locals to complete each of the Welsh Three Peaks; Snowdon, Cadair Idris and Pen-Y-Fan, on May 14,” said organisers.
“The mission statement: To raise awareness about what’s happening and to raise as much money as possible to help Dolau school stay open.
“The school closure would have a huge impact on the strong Dolau community; they have been fighting to save the school and have had tremendous support, however, we aim to raise even more awareness for what is happening to these local communities. So, we have decided to pull together and do something positive and fun.
“The Welsh Three Peaks is no easy challenge, it will be tough, but the situation is tough and although it may feel like an uphill battle, great things are achievable when we pull together.
“Although seats on the bus are limited, you can still join in as other people have offered to drive, so we can use this page to organise carpools. If you want to join in but are worried you might not be able to do all three peaks then you can join us on the last climb at Pen-Y-Fan.
“County councillor Martin Weale has offered to supply a coach to Pen-Y-Fan free of charge, which will leave from Dolau and will aim to get there roughly at the same time so we can all go up together.”
You can donate to the fundraiser and find out more at https://gofund.me/98350155. All proceeds will be going towards helping Dolau school.
The Dolau School Action Group said on its Facebook page: “Really excited for this. Let the training commence.
“If anyone would like to join for just Pen-Y-Fan, Weales Wheels are kindly putting on a coach to ferry people there.
“And if anyone would like to spur us on with a little donation to our fighting fund, we'd be really grateful."
