A pub near one of the country's main routes connecting north and south Wales has applied to install electric charge points.

The Blue Bell Inn, Llangurig could soon have two new electric vehicle quick charging points if plans are approved by Powys County Council.

The proposal will convert four existing parking spaces into electric vehicle (EV) car parking spaces at the Grade II-listed pub near the A470.

It is also proposed to install seven stainless steel bollards in front of the equipment for health and safety purposes.

Plans submitted by the applicants, Transport for Wales, say that there is currently a shortage of chargers to support the increase of motorists buying electric vehicles.

"The proposed installation will enable customers of The Blue Bell Inn to charge their vehicles whilst away from home, which promotes sustainable transport.

"The ability for more local residents and visitors to charge their vehicles in Llangurig will in turn reduce carbon emissions."

The statement adds: "The proposed equipment is becoming more commonplace in car parks due to the rise in EV purchases and the major push from the Welsh and UK Governments to roll out EV charging infrastructure for public use. Although the proposed equipment is utilitarian in nature, care has been taken to minimise the size and amount of the proposed equipment.

"When viewed in the context of its surroundings, within the car park, it is not considered that the proposal will cause an unacceptable level of harm to the conservation area or the listed building. It is considered that any perceived limited visual harm caused would be significantly outweighed by the benefits of providing EV infrastructure to Llangurig."

The Welsh Government said it will work with Transport for Wales to deliver the provision of rapid charging every 20 miles on the strategic trunk road network of Wales by 2025.
