A new shop to encourage people to repair and reuse items will open in Newtown town centre next week.
The Waste Not Shop will include a cafe, community fridge, refurbished items shop, and classes on how to repair and refashion clothes.
The former William Hill betting shop in Broad Street will open its doors on Saturday, November 27, after months of renovation work by local tradespeople.
Circular Economy Mid Wales (CEMW) which, along with Newtown and Llanllwchaiarn Town Council, received funding from the Welsh Government worth £675,000 for the project hopes to make the town the circular economy capital of the UK.
Christopher Powell, on behalf of CEMW: “We are immensely grateful to a host of partners at a local and national level. CEMW is a not-for-profit business that is proud to employ local people, and to help extend the life of valuable local resources; to help build a stronger, greener economy in Newtown and the wider area.
"This building will demonstrate a new way forward; it will help people rediscover lost skills, lessen their reliance on virgin materials, and help reduce their carbon footprint.”
The building has been extensively remodelled using salvaged and renewable materials, and has employed local craftspeople to deliver all aspects of this work, Mr Powell added.
