A group of Knighton and District Refugee Support Group members attended their local MP’s constituency office to hand over a petition opposing the proposed Nationality and Borders Bill.

The group visited the offices of Fay Jones MP by appointment on October 15 to hand over the petition, which was signed by more than 100 Brecon and Radnor constituents.

The document calls for refugees to be treated humanely and with understanding however they arrive in the UK and strongly opposes the new bill, which, the group says, would punish and criminalise those forced to flee their homes in extreme circumstances and unable to apply in advance through official channels for refugee status.

Fay Jones was unable to be present at the appointed time to receive the petition and speak to the group who took the opportunity to meet local people, who proved to be very supportive and keen to add their signatures.

A spokesman said: “The group hopes to meet with Fay in the future to further discuss its concerns on this urgent humanitarian crisis.”
