A Llanidloes man will be sharing with the nation why his favourite walk is the best in Wales on a popular television show.
Siôn Rowley, a translator for Powys County Council, will be the first to lead four rival walkers show each other different routes in Wales and learn about world-famous industry and see amazing views.
In S4C's hit programme Am Dro! Sion said he is very keen to share the beauty of the Montgomeryshire area with his fellow walkers – and a lot about the history of the lead industry.
“We are going to start in the village of Y Fan because I want to tell them about the lead industry and show that there was industry here in this rural area. And then we’ll go on to see a more recent industry at the Llyn Clywedog dam.”
The discovery of the Fan lead saw the mining operation expand and by 1868 owners invested in new machinery and increasing the number of miners.
Some of the miners came from less productive mines in the district and many were attracted to the rich new mine from further afield in Wales and soon a new village was built.
The programme will be visiting Llanidloes, Bethesda, Merthyr Mawr in the Vale of Glamorgan and Kidwelly in the company of Siôn, Ceryn, Mark and Elaine.
And as usual, at the end of each hike, the walkers will be giving marks based on every element of their walk with the winner scooping a £1,000 prize.
Mark, who is originally from Anglesey, leads his walk around the slate area of Bethesda. Down to the south next and Ceryn Lawless takes her group to the majestic Merthyr Mawr sand dunes. Then to Kidwelly and former teacher Elaine Jenkins who leads the group up to Mynyddygarreg where the group enjoy spectacular views of the Gower and Cefn Sidan beach and Kidwelly Castle.
The Am Dro! episode starring Sion and the Llanidloes area will be shown at 8pm on Sunday, October 10 on S4C with English subtitles available. The episode will also be available to watch on iPlayer.
