Great Big Green Week success

Montgomery Energy Group have thanked everyone who played their part in their Great Big Green Week.

A spokesman said: “To all the people, organisations and businesses doing their bit (big and small) to make a better world. It all matters and makes a difference.”

Montgomery School have started learning about the science behind climate/weather with short videos created by MEG’s Jeremy Thorp, and the Eco-Committee now have a wildlife camera to find out what creatures visit their school.

MEG made some new contacts at the market stall on Thursday and passed on several bikes with their free bike and maintenance scheme.

They also enjoyed a picnic together at the community orchard, which is open to everyone - and now marked on Google maps so it’s easier to find. Feel free to eat any of the ripe fruit growing there.

The final day was the busiest of all, with several events bringing the community together and showing that Montgomery cares about the environment.

Items have been saved from landfill by finding new homes locally in the garden giveaway and Mini Montys’ sale.

Fun at the town hall

Last Saturday night saw Montgomery Town Hall host its first big event since lockdown.

Glamtastic-Whamtastic was staged to showcase the kind of events that can be held at the town hall and, of course, for residents all to have a long-overdue opportunity to let their hair down.

Girlguide groups pick up the trail

Girlguiding Montgomeryshire have recently launched a series of 12 walking trails, designed by various Girlguiding units in Montgomeryshire and Merioneth.

The scheme was overseen by county walking advisor Cath Wilkins, from Montgomery, with money from a PAVO Wellbeing fund (Montgomeryshire) and Blakemore (Merioneth).

There are walks in Barmouth, Berriew, Dolgellau, Llandinam, Llanidloes, Llandrinio, Machynlleth, Montgomery, Newtown, Tywyn and Welshpool.

The leaflets are being distributed locally, so keep a look out for them; they are also all available online at https://girlguidingmontgomeryshire.org.uk/.

Cath said: “I am really delighted with how members of Girlguiding came together to produce these trails.

“There is a wide variety of walks, all showcasing our wonderful countryside and hopefully encouraging members of the public to get out and about in the fresh air.

“It has been particularly nice to see how many of our young members got involved, from designing the routes to checking the leaflets, and we hope that in the future they will maintain the trails for us.”

Ugandan schools fundraiser delight

Gail Evans, with help from friends and the Montgomery Show committee, ran a popular coffee morning fundraiser in September and has announced that it raised over £700 for schools in Kilembe Uganda.

Gail spent her childhood years in Kilembe and is undertaking various fundraising events throughout 2021/22 to help support schools.

The coffee morning, held on a community garden area of Mortimer Road with kind permission of Powis Estates, featured a huge prize raffle and plant sales as well as tea, coffee and so many donated cakes that the number of tables set up for the cake stall had to be doubled.

Gail said: “Huge thanks to everyone that supported my coffee morning. It means so much to me and the schools I’m supporting in Uganda.”

Gail will be travelling out to Uganda in February 2023, Covid permitting. Her next fundraiser will be a “barrow of booze” raffle in the autumn. She has also set up a fundraising page at https://www.justgiving.com/crowdfunding/gailsfundraising

Town cleaned up

Montgomery mayor Jill Kibble has thanked a small but keen group of residents and councillors who helped with the town tidy and street sweep at the end of September.

She said: “A very big thank you. It made a real difference. Your participation was much appreciated and many people around town have commented favourably.

“There was no use of weed killer, and lots of composting. Thanks also to those residents who came out and weeded and swept their frontages in sympathy and the lovely people who offered cups of tea and words of encouragement.”

The mayor also thanked Montgomery School for doing an enthusiastic litter pick after purchasing new litter pickers from Bunners.

She said: “The class had done a jolly good job and we definitely noticed there was very little litter in the centre of town.”
