Powys rider Chaz Davies has announced that he will retire from World Superbike racing at the end of the season.

The 34-year-old from Presteigne has decided to call time on his illustrious career that has spanned almost a decade.

"I feel that the timing is right to turn the page and open a new chapter, sooner or later, all good things must come to an end," Davies said in a statement on Thursday evening (September 23).

The Welshman said switching his focus from the intensity of being a fulltime World Superbike (WorldSBK) rider will allow him to spend more time with his young family but will also remain actively training and riding motorcycles.

Davies thanked his partner Hattie, "the foundation of our family", and his mum and dad who helped him on the path to becoming a world-class rider.

He said: "I've achieved results and gained a life experience that I could have only dreamed of when my family and I first embarked on this adventure.

"This sport has been my life for 27 years and has given me everything - including, in a way that only racing can, the highest of highs and the lowest of lows.

"I've raced against my heroes and will forever have the utmost respect for the competitors I've lined up alongside and who have inspired me to push myself beyond my own limits time and time again.

"I've had the opportunity to travel to parts of the globe that a kid from Presteigne hadn't even heard of.

"Finally, I want to thank the fans that have been behind me and also those that have rubbished me, you've all played a key part in empowering me to be better.

"I've never wanted to be defined as just a motorcycle racer. It's what I do, what I enjoy and what I'm proud to have found success at, but it is just one part of my life. The world is a big place, the opportunities are many and I look forward to turning my hand to the next challenge. Whatever that may be, I'm excited for it!"

Davies finished runner-up in WorldSBK on three occasions, in 2015, 2017 and 2018 and third placed on another two occasions as he often fought for the title throughout his career.

He also had two full seasons in WorldSSP and won the title in 2011 by 50 points over his nearest rival, ensuring he will go down in history as a World Champion.
