Demolition work is now underway at an historic Welshpool school building.

Following the resolution of a dispute over footpaths at the former Ysgol Maesydre, contractors have now moved into the site and have demolished outbuildings on the site ahead of planned construction work on what will eventually become the new Ysgol Gymraeg Y Tralllwng.

Drone footage posted by the school earlier today (August 18) shows the dramatic progress made on site so far, with only the historic former main building still standing.

The 150-place Ysgol Gymraeg Y Trallwng, which has been described as a "flagship project" by the council, will see the integration of the Grade II listed former main school building with modern architecture.

The building will also be the first energy efficient Passivhaus hybrid project in the UK.

Speaking last month, Ysgol Gymraeg Y Trallwng headteacher Angharad Davies said the future is "extremely bright" for the development of Welsh education and the Welsh language in the area.

"This building will provide unique and valuable experiences to all associated with the school and Welshpool," Ms Davies said.

"The building will also give everybody access to a world of creativity and wonder in teaching and learning terms. The future is extremely bright."
