A group of North Powys runners has helped to raise over £6,000 for charity - after taking part in a relay run of nearly 2,000 miles.

The team of ladies from the Dolly Mixtures running club took on the relay challenge as one of 27 teams taking part in the relay organised by "She Runs Cardiff", which raised money for patient care charity Kidney Wales.

Runners from as far afield as Botswana, Australia and the United States of America volunteered to take part in the virtual relay, with runners starting at 7am on Saturday, July 3, and finishing at 7pm that evening.

And they were joined by members of Dolly Mixtures groups from five different regions in Powys and Shropshire as the group aimed to hit as many miles as possible during the 12 hour event.

"It was a privilege for me to be Team Dollies Captain and we had absolutely brilliant day - we all loved the relay and helping raise funds for Kidney Wales," said team spokesperson Emma Hughes.

"It's a charity and an issue that's affected quite a few of our members, so it's most definitely an issue that's quite close to home.

"We started at 7 and the last lady finished at 7 - we did it in 30 minutes and every half an hour we handed the 'baton', a bag of dolly mixtures, over and we carried on throughout the day.

"There were 24 of us, with each of our clubs represented by at least one runner so all the Welsh clubs and two of the English clubs took part as well.

"It was absolutely amazing, it was just a brilliant weekend.

"Diolch o galon, thanks a million to Myfanwy (Thomas, event organiser) for organising a fantastic event."

By the end of the day, the Dolly Mixtures runners clocked up 110km (68 miles) to be added to the overall team total of 2,849km or 1,770 miles.

The event was the third of its kind organised by the She Runs Cardiff team, with the first two events held in 2019 and 2020 raising money for Cardiff charities.

"This time we chose Kidney Wales because of a very personal connection to the cause," said event organiser Myfanwy Thomas.

"Kidney disease is incredibly debilitating and affects as many as one in 10 of us so it is something which has touched many of us.

"There are several members in our group affected by it themselves, or with relatives or friends affected by it - One of our own running buddies, Rosie, donated one of her own kidneys to her best friend Zoe only three months ago."
