A RAILWAY working group is calling for major changes to Welshpool Railway Station after it claimed results from a recent audit saw passengers label it the ‘worst on the Wales network’.
The Shrewsbury Aberystwyth Rail Liaison Committee wants to see improvements to rail services in the town, and has put forward a case for a new station.
A report put together by the committee claims Welshpool Railway Station in its current condition has poor access, limited car parking and is ‘not disabled friendly’.
The committee has put forward a case for a new station in its report, and believes improvements to the service for people travelling by rail in Welshpool are overdue.
The report read: “Those travelling to work by train in wet or cold weather find the station unfit for purpose.
“They leave a train only to find themselves soaked with rain or freezing cold before being able to get to a car to take them onward.
“The economic base of Welshpool is growing and there are many jobs to be supported in the industrial estate next to the station.
“With an improved station this will encourage more people to think about investing in Welshpool.
It added: “A full hourly train service is due in December 2022 which will attract even more rail users to a station not fit for purpose.
“The station is the worst on the Wales network taking into account the number of passengers who use the facility.
“Sugar Loaf Station on the Heart of Wales Line has as many facilities as Welshpool for just a handful of passengers.
“Major station improvements are well overdue.”
