A TINY village in Powys is perhaps the last place you’d expect to find a gourmet British restaurant offering their prime products.
But that’s exactly where the Beefy Boys could be found earlier this month, when they pulled up in Dolau, near Llandrindod Wells. And the Hereford-based burger restaurant sold enough burgers to feed each person in the village’s reported population of 228 (according to the 2011 census) three times when they popped up with their pop-up takeaway van on Sunday, April 18.
The takeaway treat was organised by Dolau Community Hall with residents queuing up to get their hands on the Beefy Boys’ coveted burgers.
“The sun was shining so it was perfect weather for everyone to take their burgers home to enjoy in the garden,” said Sarah Price, of Dolau Community Hall.
“The Beefy Boys sold out after selling an amazing 650 burgers. After a great turnout plans are underway for the Beefy Boys to return.”
The hall added on its Facebook page: “Thank you to the Beefy Boys for visiting us today and a massive thank you to everyone who brought ducks to support our village school Llanfihangel Rhydithon-Dolau-Community Primary School.
“We hope everyone could see what a strong community we are. We will be working with the Beefy Boys to have them again in the near future.”
The Beefy Boys have caused a sensation locally, including Mid Wales, since storming onto the scene back in 2011.
The company was set up by four friends, amateur cooks who shared a passion for local produce and dirty American-style burgers and BBQ. The quartet entered the UK’s biggest BBQ competition, Grillstock, in Bristol, in 2014, winning the coveted title of Best Burger.
From there they moved on to the prestigious World Food Championships in Las Vegas a year later, where they competed against 50 of the best burger chefs in the world for the title of World’s Best Burger – and finished runners-up overall with their ‘Butty Bach Burger’.
The Beefy Boys used their winnings in Vegas to open a restaurant, The Beefy Boys Meat Boutique, in Hereford, in 2016. And, earlier this month, they announced that they will be opening a second venue, in Shrewsbury, in the coming months.
