ACTIVIST Angie Zelter shares her lifelong dedication to protesting and advice for the next generation in a new book published for International Women’s Day.
‘Activism for Life’ is an engaging and meticulously researched account of a life lived in pursuit of justice and peace, packed with advice and further reading for anyone interested in the ongoing campaigns described.
‘Choose to Challenge’, the theme for International Women’s Day 2021, taking place next Monday, March 8, is also a fitting theme for Knighton-based Angie’s book, due to be released by Luath Press.
Angie has been arrested around 200 times for participating in nonviolent civil disobedience and has a wealth of stories and hard-won wisdom to share. This timely memoir is interspersed with lessons learnt from 45 years of nonviolent resistance in the UK and abroad: from Greenham Common to Extinction Rebellion via the Sarawak forests of Malaysia, Faslane Peace Camp and a Palestinian olive grove to name just a few.
“I wanted to find ways to change the age-old patterns of exploitation, power abuse and fear that were fuelling the nuclear arms race, environmental destruction and ecocide on our planet,” said Angie.
An active campaigner for most of her life, Angie has founded several innovative and effective campaigns. Her protests have been for a nuclear free world that shares global resources equitably and sustainably while respecting human rights and the rights of other life forms. As a global citizen she has expressed her solidarity with movements all over the world. This has led to numerous arrests, court appearances and incarceration. Angie has been arrested in the UK, as well as Belgium, Canada, France, Germany, Gran Canaria, the Netherlands, Israel, Palestine, Malaysia, Poland and South Korea. She has spent over two years in total in prison awaiting trials on remand or serving sentences, all for nonviolent resistance protests.
‘Activism for Life’ includes a conversation between Angie and a 17-year-old activist about how we advance the conversation as global citizens. How do we learn and grow from what has gone before? How do we sustain ourselves when the change we work for is slow? And most importantly of all, how do we ensure a diversity of voices are raised when campaigning for change?
“Angie personifies what being an activist means – courage, commitment and a conscience. So many talk about wanting to change the world for the better: Angie doesn’t just talk, she does it. She’s an inspiration to us all,” said MP Caroline Lucas, two-time leader of the Green Party.
