Electricians have discovered asbestos in the Victoria Bowling Club in Welshpool.
The town council had asked for a quote on updating the pavilion's electrics when the asbestos was located.
Welshpool Town Council's interim clerk, Anne Wilson, showed pictures of the asbestos and the general poor state of the building in a virtual full council meeting on Wednesday, August 19.
"We can't get an electric quote until the asbestos is removed," she said. The council was also told that further repair work may need to be carried out due to its poor state of repair.
Councillor Heather Sherlock questioned whether the council even needed to keep the building and if repairing it would be a "waste of money".
However, Ms Wilson said that the council leases the bowling club from Powys Estates and that they may not take it back if it's in a poor state.
"It's a really difficult one. The public need to know the difficulties we have got as well."
Councillor Alison Davies asked if any money might be available to help repair the building - which Ms Wilson said she would look into.
