As the temperature rose, so did the thrills and spills of top class banger racing at Bettws on Sunday.

A record-breaking crowd of more than 3,500 people turned up to watch more than 45 races in the glorious sunshine and baking heat.

Overall winner was John Rowlands, from Blaenau Ffestiniog, who was also the 2017 winner.

The event saw 106 drivers, a new record, take part in the ninth annual race with 87 cars from across the country participating.

More than £23,000 was raised on the day which has helped smash the £150,000 fundraising target.

The money will be split between large and small charities such as the Wales Air Ambulance and local schools, sports clubs and social groups.

Alun Horn, committee chairman, said: “It went perfectly. Everyone came together and it seems to get easier to run every year. It’s very well supported by locals. The weather was beautiful and it was boiling hot and of course there was very fast racing.”

Organisers thank the landowners, marshals, drivers, volunteers, spectators and everyone who was involved in the event.
