David Phillips
PHILLIPS David "Dai" Neuadd Wen, Trefeglwys Road, Llanidloes. It is with great sadness that the family announce the death of Mr David "Dai" Phillips, who passed away on Monday 29th April 2024 after a long battle with illness, aged 91 years. The son of Jim and Gertie Phillips, Dai was born in Brecon in 1933. He attended primary school in Brecon and then due to his father working as a line engineer on the railways moved to Machynlleth where he attended Machynlleth High School. After completing his A levels, he decided to do his mandatory 2 years National Service with the RAF, before attending teacher training college in Bangor and then completing his training at the PE College in Loughborough. On completion of his teacher training he applied for a job as head of PE at Llanidloes High School and so began a long association with the school and the town where he settled and raised his family, living in the same house for over 61 years. He retired from teaching after 37 years having earned the respect and admiration of over 3 generations of many families in Llanidloes. As many in the Mid Wales area will know, Dai was a very accomplished footballer and later manager and coach. He was part of the successful Porthmadog and Llanidloes teams which won the Welsh Amateur Cup and played for and managed Llanidloes to many further successes. In later life he acted as a senior administrator with the Welsh and Mid Wales Schools Athletics Associations, The Welsh Football Association and his local RAFA Branch. He was also a very proud and long serving Mason. Dai is succeeded by his sons Guy, Jason, Jamie and Stephen, grandchildren Sam, Jordan, Bradley and India and the most recent addition to the family his great-granddaughter Rae. Dai's funeral will be held on Friday 24th May, but it was his explicit wish that he wanted a small funeral with just family and close friends attending. He will be greatly missed by his family and the local and wider community where he was a well known and highly respected figure. Donations if desired in memory of Dai will be gratefully received for Llanidloes Hospital League of Friends or Llanidloes Football Club.
