Llanfyllin close gap on leaders with Blues win

LLANFYLLIN Town closed the gap at the top of Honda Division One of the J T Hughes Montgomeryshire League with a 2-1 win at home to Caersws Reserves.

Goals from Lee Griffiths and Bobbie Phillips earned the Magpies the spoils and cancelled Tom Evans’ reply to close the gap on leaders, Meifod to two points with both sides having four games remaining.

Meifod stayed top of the pile with an Abba Salahi double earning a 3-1 midweek win at Berriew Reserves with Phil Hughes completing the Kings tally while Josh Gethin netted for the hosts.

Gethin was also on the scoresheet as Berriew Reserves claimed a 2-2 draw at Morda United on Saturday.

Veteran Jamie Loxam also struck for the Rhiewsiders to cancel out efforts from Joe Kilvert and Owen Davies for the hosts and ensure a hard earned point.

Meanwhile Ryan Broadbent’s brace inspired bottom of the table Llanrhaeadr Reserves to a 4-1 win at Guilsfield Reserves to boost their hopes of a great escape.

Dale Evans and Iwan Matthews goals completed the visitors scoring while the Guils hit back through Mark Davies.

Trewern thrashed Maesyrhandir 7-1 to climb to second place in Mitsubishi Division Two while delivering a potentially critical blow to the Newtown side's promotion hopes.

Charlie Proctor starred with a hat-trick for the rampant Tigers with Joe Beddoes, Tobias Divall, Jake Mann and Barry Haralambous also netting while Jack Carroll reduced the arrears with a consolation.

Meanwhile Llangedwyn maintained their revival with goals from James Evans, Josh Evans and James Broadbent sealing a comfortable 3-0 win at home to Abermule Reserves.

 

* MIKE Edwards led Llanymynech to glory in a 5-1 win at home to Trefonen in the first round of the Mid Wales Trophies Consolation Cup.

Edwards proved the scourge of the Trefonen defence with a four goal haul while Grant Jones completed the hosts scoring and Cameron Relf reduced the arrears with a consolation.

Meanwhile Welshpool Town Reserves struck nine in an emphatic 9-2 thrashing of Llanfechain.

James Clewlow and Tom Anderson shared the limelight with both completing hat-tricks while Dave Walton’s brace and a Vasile Blioander goal sealed the Lilywhites as Llanfechain hit back through while Dan Jay and Phil Williams.
