A WELSHPOOL woman has published a children’s book she wrote 25 years ago in aid of the hospital where she received cancer treatment this year.
Pat Checkley decided to finally publish ‘The Legend of Fred’, which had been at the bottom of a drawer for quarter of a century, as a way to thank the Lingen Davies Unit at Shrewsbury Hospital.
She said: “I suppose it would still be in the bottom drawer, had I not become ill with cancer.
“During my months of treatment both at the Lingen Davies centre and Ward 23 – oncology ward – at the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital, I experienced the love, care and dedication of the medial and ancillary staff there.
“I also encountered some beautiful people who are no longer with us. This book is dedicated to all those whose lives are or have been touched by cancer.”
The book, about a small, friendly dragon, includes illustrations inspired by drawings of Fred by Pat’s then 13-year-old daughter Katy, who now lives in Australia.
They were used by local illustrator Dean B Bowen to create the artwork for the book.
Pat has 1,800 copies on sale for £5 each, with all profits going to the Lingen Davies Fund.
It can be purchased from Fitzgerald’s and the Leg Club, both in Welshpool, and from Pat directly by contacting 07770257882. Pat will also be selling copies at Welshpool’s Tesco on November 17 and 24, and December 8, from 10am.
