A RHAYADER pub has been named one of the five Best Bikers’ Pubs in Britain by a bikers’ magazine and is now looking to do even more to boost the area’s appeal for motorcyclists.
Paul Dark’s Cornhill Inn is selected for this month’s issue of Ride magazine for Great Ride-Outs to pubs with great music, beer and company.
The Cornhill is listed alongside the Tan Hill Inn, Reeth, North Yorkshire; the Anchor Inn, Friskney, Lincolnshire; the Kingswood Tavern, Nuneaton and the Victoria Bikers Pub, Coalville, Leicestershire, as its top five picks.
It is recommended as biker owned, “so you can get advice (and maybe even a practical demonstration) on the excellent routes in this part of Cymru.
“Nice touches include a drying room for wet kit – as it does occasionally rain in Wales - and bike-washing facilities.
“Once you’ve taken care of that you can relax in front of the log fire in this comfortable inn, which probably hasn’t been changed at all much since it was built in the 16th century,” it reports.
Paul Dark, who is also a Rhayader town councillor, as well as a popular singer and entertainer, said: “Michelle and myself have been in the Cornhill for four-and-a -half years running it together as a family run business but I have been a biker for 20 years.
“Our intention has always been just to offer clean friendly accommodation for visitors to rural Wales with the bonus of offering dry secure storage for motor bikes and gear.
“We get riders travelling all around Wales and discovering ‘Wales via the back door’ here. I think it is important that we keep people coming to Mid Wales like this. We can accommodate up to 10 people but they stay with us and use the facilities of the town particularly buying fuel and food especially in the pubs with evening meals.
“Having this publicity is fantastic for us and reward for the hard work.”
Cllr Dark added: “For next year we are planning a special bikers night on Wednesdays from around April or May through to September with ‘Fish and Chip Runs’ riding to places like Welshpool, Newtown, Aberystwyth or Cardigan and riding back afterwards.
“We are right in the middle of the lovely Elan Valley and we want to put the area even more of the map in 2017 by doing Adventure Bike Trails for large trail bikes like the BMW which are much heavier than the sports bike and we are looking to cater for routes for the off road and adventure bikes around Wales.
“We are also hoping for more coverage in Ride as they say they are hoping to come down and do a feature on the Cornhill sometime.”
